Caravan of the Future

Judging Criteria

  • The judges will be looking for exciting, innovative and relevant concepts for the “Caravan of the Future”.
  • These 3 qualities will carry most weight with the judges.
  • Caravan Club members are a diverse group, involving couples, families, extended families and other social groups.  Designs which are versatile in their application to different numbers of people are likely to gain merit.
  • Caravanners have a wide range of activities they do within and around their caravan - eg sleep, cook, eat, wash, sunbathe, barbecue to name just a few .  A winning design is likely to be flexible in its use for such activities.  This should include thought for the use of the interior living space, interior and/or exterior storage provision, and consideration of the utilisation of the space around the unit for outdoor activities.
  • Caravanners increasingly choose to tour through an extended season, or even all year round.  Suitability for extended season or ideally all year use would be an advantage.
  • Transportation costs are rising, meaning smaller vehicles are likely to become the norm.  Hence, it is desirable that weight is minimised.  Typical current models weigh in the range of 150–195kg per m length of habitation area (ie excluding chassis, base vehicle etc).  Leading designs should significantly better this.
  • The safety of the design on the road should be considered (ie stability, centre of gravity and aerodynamics), although detailed work on this issue is not expected.
  • Compliance with current and likely future standards and legislation for caravan design would be credited, although full compliance it is not expected or required.
